The round table entitled “A vision for the REnewal of the European Union” will host the President of the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament, Stephan Sejourne. The conversation with the President of Renew Europe is organized by Slovenian MEPs from the mentioned parliamentary group, Irena Joveva (Renew Europe/LMŠ) and dr. Klemen Grošelj (Renew Europe/LMŠ). Discussions will focus on the group’s priorities, with an emphasis on respect for the rule of law. In the light of the current situation throughout the EU, we will also touch on the situation in the media, the judiciary, the sustainable future of the EU, as well as issues of how to ensure equal rights and freedoms for all citizens and a strong economic and secure Europe. The interlocutors will talk about the situation in the EU and in Slovenia.

The speakers at the round table will be:
• Stephane Sejourne, MEP and President of the Renew Europe Group (Renew Europe/En Marche!),
• Irena Joveva, MEP (Renew Europe/LMŠ),
• Klemen Grošelj, MEP (Renew Europe/LMŠ),

MEP Joveva will take part in a discussion with students of the Ravne na Koroškem Grammar School “Think and say it out loud!”, which is being carried out by the IPM institute under the auspices of the IPM Academy in cooperation with Slovenian secondary schools. The project addresses the issue of low levels of active citizenship among young people, which is one of the biggest problems of modern democracies. Within the project, young people will put themselves in the role of decision-makers and present their proposals for measures in the field of youth policies and issues aimed at implementing the EU Youth Strategy 2021-2027. The event will take place via the digital tool ZOOM and is expected to last two school hours.

MEP Irena Joveva (Renew Europe/LMŠ) is organising a virtual round table titled “Mental Health: Problems and Challenges Facing Adolescents” on Thursday, 3 February 2022, from 11 am to 12.30 pm.

The field of mental health is extremely important for the quality of life of an individual. However, the situation in this area, especially among young people, has recently deteriorated sharply, as shown by numerous indicators, expert analyzes and research that highlight the growing number of adolescents diagnosed with mental and behavioural disorders and the growing proportion of young people who regularly experience loneliness and stress. Last but not least, young people were further affected by measures of closed public life, restrict activities and distance learning as a result of limiting the Covid-19 pandemic. Feelings of loneliness and stress, which worsen the mental health situation among young people, have also intensified.

Thus, in the office of MEP Irena Joveva, we decided to organize a round table to address this burning issue and talk about it with experts in the field of psychiatry and youth work.

We’ll discuss the topic with:

  • Irena Joveva, MEP (Renew Europe/LMŠ),
  • Maria Soraya Rodriguez Ramos (Renew Europe/Ciudadanos),
  • Marjan Šarec, president of the LMŠ party,
  • dr. Andrej Naterer, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor, co-author of the research Youth 2020,
  • dr. Marija Anderluh, Ph.D. med., Head of the Department of Child Psychiatry, University Medical Center Ljubljana,
  • doc. dr. Andreja Poljanec, B.Sc. B.Sc. psych., spec. marital and family therapies; and
  • Klemen Selaković, author of the most listened Slovenian podcast Aidea and digital nomad.

The round table will be chaired and moderated by the Member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia Aljaž Kovačič (LMŠ), a member of the Committee on Education, Science, Sport and Youth in the National Assembly.

You will be able to watch the round table live on the Facebook profile of MP Irena Joveva: here.

Welcome to join us.

MEP Irena Joveva will be a guest of the dialogue with young people, which will take place on Thursday, 27 January 2022 at 5 pm, as part of the rEUral Europe project. They will talk about work in the European Parliament, women’s equality in politics, youth engagement and other current topics.

rEUral Europe is a one-year project supported by the European Parliament, implemented by the MaMa Network in cooperation with the Institute for Political Management, Youth Centers and Secondary Schools. The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the structure, functioning and influence of the European Union and the European Parliament. The project brings the European Union closer to its citizens and supports their democratic participation. The main goal of the project is to raise awareness of citizens, especially young people, about how European parliamentary democracy works and the impact that the EU has on our lives.

The Covid19 pandemic further emphasised the need for responsible, professional and objective journalism, whose key tasks are to inform the public and control the work of political, capital and other power holders.

How necessary is journalism for the existence of a democratic society? How to prevent pressures and attacks on journalists and provide them with an appropriate social status and significance for their mission? How to ensure the professionalism of journalism?

These and related issues will be discussed in an online debate on the future of journalism in the European Union, in which members of the FEJS Journalism Students’ Association and MEPs Irena Joveva and Milan Zver will exchange views on Wednesday, 12 January.

You will be able to watch the discussion live on the Facebook profile of the European Parliament Office in Slovenia: https://bit.ly/FBeploLJ.

We invite you to an online panel discussion inspired by the short movie When we were them, made by an Oscar-winning BiH director Danis Tanović and a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Damir Šagolj.

The 8-minute documentary shows the inhumanity and brutality people on the move face on a daily basis at Europe’s doorstep. Surrounded by minefields and destruction from the Bosnian war, thousands of migrants are still stranded in the northern part of the war-torn country. Heart-breaking scenes leave us questioning human nature and the consequences of the armed conflicts. Terrifying images are also coming from the Polish-Belarusian border where we can witness cruel reality and uncertainty faced by the people in need. Today they are part of more than 80 million forcibly displaced people around the world in search of peace and survival.

Borders have never stopped people from moving. New humanitarian crisis erupt more and more often. Following the 2015 migration flows to Europe the main flaws of the EU’s asylum and migration system were exposed. There has been some progress made since then but much more effort and political will is needed for fairer and more effective system, that is based on solidarity.

Regardless of the laws and policies, the perception of migrants, refugees or asylum seekers, caused by fear, unawareness and lack of information, divides the societies all over the world. The main purpose of the event is to discuss the stories behind the labels given to the people on the move and in need, to address the challenges faced by the Member States and the role of the European institutions in the field of migration and asylum policies.

Our panellists:
– Damir Šagolj, Director of the movie, photojournalist and Pulitzer prize winner;
– Tom Snels, Deputy Head of Cabinet to Commissioner for Home affairs Ylva Johannson;
– Esther Pozo Vera, Head of Asylum Unit at DG HOME;
– Katarzyna Staszewska, Activist from the NGO Grupa Granica working on the Polish-Belarusian border;
– Sabiha Kapetanović, Child Protection Programme Coordinator at Save the Children in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On 04 December 2020 from 09:00 to 11:00, the first public event of the Cultural Creators Friendship Group (CCFG) gets live and online. The Members of the CCFG will present themselves, explain what the CCFG is and does, and discuss the current situation of cultural creators in the EU. We are especially delighted to have Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Culture and Education, with us.

The COVID-19 pandemic has already resulted in crucial economic and political changes globally. In the emergency situations, extraordinary measures by governments can be necessary, but democratic institutions and minority rights must be respected. Beyond the national level, in the European Union the coronavirus could cause a backsliding in integration as borders are closed, the movement of persons is restricted and distrust in international organisations might grow. Nevertheless, citizens in populist regimes are witnessing how the constricted public sphere and crooked governance leads to policy failures. Also, the need for international cooperation when challenging global risks might give a new momentum for the European integration.

In our conference we wish to introduce how central European countries coped with the first wave of the pandemic and what the governments intend to do when dealing with the second wave. We will also discuss how the European Union can help the region and the importance of local communities and municipal governments during the pandemic.

The Office of the European Parliament in Slovenia is organising a webinar on the European Union, during which MEP Irena Joveva will present to students what the work of an MEP looks like in practice.
